WE WHO STUDY KARATE DO ASPIRE TO THESE VIRTUES;
- We shall always practice patience, courtesy, humility.
- We shall be quick to seize opportunity.
- We shall block soft and strike hard.
- We shall always believe that nothing is impossible.
- We shall always be aware.
- Speed and technique are the essence of Karate.
- We shall always keep the fighting spirit of Mushin Goju Ryu.
- We shall be loyal to ourselves, Bushido, Karate, and Mushin Goju Ryu.
THE KATA OF MUSHIN GOJU RYU
A kata is a pattern of movements, which contain a series of logical and mostly
practical attacking and blocking techniques. You are telling a story in a kata
and how you interpret these movements and act them out will tell the
audience how intense you are. All kata should have certain fundamentals
governing them that can be duplicated in real scenarios. Although karate
kata is done alone or with an imaginary opponent, there still must reside in
them the basic laws of physics that govern all things.
Kata is the “religion” of your particular style, that which inspires us to do
more and learn more. The true meaning of karate is embedded in the kata and
only by the practice of kata can we come to understand them.
It is through the kata that we can begin to see the differences between the
hard and soft aspects of Goju, as well as how to incorporate many grappling
techniques. There is no time limit in learning kata, but the time must be spent
practicing them to learn.
In karate, all kata begin with a self-defense move, because there are no first
attacks. Remember, the best defense is never to be where violence can occur.
